A Mercedes-Benz New Actros truck finished in pole position in the McCulla fuel efficiency trail earlier this year. Mercedes-Benz Actros left all other major manufacturers behind as they soared to victory.
The trucks that proved successful in their victory are now actively hauling refrigerated trailers from Ireland and Great Britain. Not only this, but the trucks are also making frequent trips to France, Switzerland and the Benelux countries.
Based on the results from the trail and excellent service in the field, the operator has ordered 10 more 6X2 StreamSpace units with the same top notch 450 hp straight-sex engines for delivery next year.
Brian Beattie Transport Director said: “We trialled demonstration units from all the main manufacturers against a New Actros ‘seed’ vehicle which we’d bought from MB T&V at the end of last year the Mercedes-Benz was the clear winner in terms of fuel efficiency.”
“Readings from the Daimler FleetBoard telematics systems on the new vehicles tell us they are averaging well over 9 mpg, and some are consistently returning better than 10 mpg.
“With a few more miles under their belts, and with the benefit of some specialist driver training tips delivered by Mercedes-Benz Truck & Van, we confidently expect them to settle at around 9.75 mpg. Compare that to our previous fleet average of 7.25 mpg and it’s easy to see why we’re so pleased with our New Actros!”
As an added extra, McCulla offer PPC (Predictive Powertrain Control) This implements 3D GPS mapping to read and predict the topography of the terrain ahead, then automatically responds by controlling the speed of the vehicle, the braking and transmission, to squeeze the most out of the fuel this is fuel efficiency at its best.
Available at a cost of £1,349 on all New Actros models, it would be an excellent tool to use alongside Mobil Delvac 1 products. The Mobil Delvac 1 Series of lubricants are specially formulated and designed to make fuel efficiency a reality.
Mercedes-Benz claims the easy-to-operate system reduces fuel use by approximately five per cent a huge figure when it comes to fuel efficiency.
“It’s an excellent service and a good example of how the dealer has gone ‘above and beyond’ for us,” said Mr Beattie. “Sales executive Roy Owens was very helpful when we came to configure the trucks, particularly with regard to the positioning of the fifth wheels so that all these new units can comply with the strict 4.0-metre maximum operation height in Switzerland.”
With more scientifically advanced technology coming into play in trucks on the road, it won’t be long before entire fleets of vehicles make use of this technology. This can only mean good things for businesses and customers alike who want to get the most out of their fuel.
